The language is straightforward and you’ll hear the phrase on a regular basis if you live in Korea. Take a look at the video to learn how to say “cat” in Korean!

‘Cat’ in Korean

While the word for “dog” in Korean is very easy to remember and pronounce, the term for “cat” may be a little more difficult to remember and pronounce. But what exactly is the correct term? Korea’s name for cat is (goyangi), which means “cat” in English. It has three syllables, but it’s really pretty simple to say because of the short vowels. As an added bonus, the Japanese term for cat, (goyangi), may also be translated as “kitten.” The following are some sample phrases that will help you understand and remember how the term ‘cat’ is used in practice, in order to maximize your learning and memorization.

As a bonus, here’s what the Korean name for the sound that cats make is: yaong (meow) = yaong As an illustration, consider the phrase: (goyangiga yaongyaong ulgo isseoyo) The cat is making meow noises.

A Word of Caution About Romanization

Despite the fact that we give the romanized version of the Korean terms we teach, learning Hangul will help you perform much better (the Korean alphabet). Romanization is accomplished by taking the Korean term and adopting letter combinations that are comparable in sound in English. Because it is less exact than Hangul, it is quite simple to mispronounce things or to misinterpret what the other person is trying to communicate with. It is significantly easier to learn the Korean alphabet, especially considering that it can be completed in just one hour.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll find yourself reading Korean letters on a regular basis!

Because the term (goyangi) explicitly implies cat – as well as the other corresponding meanings for ‘cat’ in English – there should be very little doubt about the meaning of the word whenever it is heard or seen.

You should put your newfound knowledge into practice by visiting a cat café or similar establishment.

Goyang: How this city in South Korea went cat crazy

(CNN) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is urging farmers to plant more crops in the coming year. Goyang, one of Seoul’s main satellite cities, is well known for its annual international flower festival, which takes place in the city. However, for years, officials struggled to distinguish this metropolis of one million people from its counterparts in the region. The local government maintained a number of social media accounts, but no one seemed to be interested in the information that was being posted there.

The city’s name (Goyang) is close to the Korean term for cat, which led to someone half-jokingly suggesting that a cat should be used to reflect the city’s personality at a conference in 2013.

Choi Seo-young, a public relations employee who was in charge of the city’s social media, recommended that they test the concept on the city’s highly unpopular Facebook page with a kitten she sketched on a piece of paper and post the results on the page.

From joke to reality

The following is a transcript of a CNN interview with a reporter from the U.S. News & World Report (CNN): Goyang is one of Seoul’s major satellite cities and is well renowned for its yearly international flower festival. Although officials fought for years to distinguish this metropolis of one million people from its counterparts, they finally succeeded in 2011. There were several social media accounts for the local administration, but no one seemed to be interested in the stuff they were posting.

“How about a cat to reflect the character of the city?” someone suggested half-jokingly at a conference in 2013, pointing out the parallels between the name of the city (Goyang) and the Korean term for cat (goyang-yi).

Choi Seo-young, a public relations employee who was in charge of the city’s social media, recommended that they test the concept on the city’s highly unpopular Facebook page with a kitten she sketched on a piece of paper and then post the results.

Cat power

Cats are popular on social media platforms throughout Asia and the rest of the world – and South Korea is no exception to this rule. Heek, an all-white cat that lives on the popular South Korean resort island of Jeju, has more than 190,000 Instagram followers, according to the company. Fortunately, the stray cat was adopted by Lee Sina, a single inhabitant of the island of Jeju, and his circumstances have improved since then. The cat celebrity doesn’t have to do much to get the attention of her followers.

  1. In 2017, Lee wrote a book about Heek, which debuted in the top 100 books countrywide for two weeks at Yes24, South Korea’s largest online bookshop, according to the company.
  2. Cats, as opposed to dogs, are thought to require less attention and care.
  3. Park Jung-yoon, a well-known South Korean celebrity veterinarian, feels that the increasing popularity of cats is attributable to a shift in Korean culture.
  4. However, as people have become more individualistic, cats’ independent nature and outsider-like image may have become more appealing to them.
  5. According to the results of a poll conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in 2019, cats are favoured by individuals who live in single-person homes.
  6. Cats are extremely popular among single-person families, and this has resulted in the development of specialized housing designs.
  7. The company’s commercial film has a Persian Blue cat who asks, “Hey butler, have you located our home yet?” before introducing an apartment that includes a cat entrance, cat tower, special cat bathtub, and other amenities.
  8. CNN’s Yoonjung Seo contributed to this report.

The reputation makeover

For the better part of a decade, cats were generally despised in Korea. Strikingly named “thief cats” because of their proclivity for tearing apart plastic bags to get at food leftovers contained therein, stray cats were seen as unsanitary germ vectors. In 2015, Yaong-yi, South Korea’s first newspaper dedicated to cats, began publishing. “Even ten years ago, people thought cats were just helpful for capturing mice,” says Park Sang-wook, editor of Yaong-yi, South Korea’s first newspaper dedicated to cats.

  • I can definitely sense a shift in the air.
  • Cats were designed to be born, to survive on food scraps found in trash bags left outside people’s houses, and to die when they become old or sick on the streets, not in cages.
  • For example, Park claims that before 2016, the number of pet-related exhibits was less than ten, but that number had expanded by four or five times by 2017 and 2018.
  • “Many firms that previously focused on conducting wedding or baby expos have converted to pet expos,” she adds.
  • According to the most recent data available from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, this compares to 1.73 in the United States and 1.42 in Japan.
  • “Cats are now on the same level as celebrities,” Park explains.
  • As soon as Eve moved in with her, she began collaborating with other restaurant and café owners to provide care for the cats in the area they shared.

They provide food for stray cats and hold meetings to discuss what to do if they come across ill ones. Using the slogan “we’re not things,” she is attempting to reform South Korean legislation, which still treats dogs as property, making it difficult to prosecute those who abuse their pets.

Not everyone has fallen for cats. yet

Cats’ increasing popularity has resulted in an increase in the number of people who own them as pets, as well as an increase in the number of stray cats as some people leave their new friends. Many stray animals become victims of cruelty or sickness and are forced to seek refuge in shelters. RAY, which opened its doors in 2018, is one of a slew of new cat shelters in Seoul. “Animals were able to exist in their own environment, but with all of the advancements in technology, they now require our assistance.

  • Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency initiated a programme in 2016 to capture stray cats, neuter them, and return them to their original homes – all with the help of government subsidies.
  • RAY is no exception, with over 90 cats living in a tiny two-story building on the outskirts of Seoul’s northern suburbs.
  • Many cat enthusiasts believe that increased protection for pets and stray cats is very necessary, yet no one can disagree that the cats’ social standing has been boosted well above their original status.
  • That was less than ten years ago, to be exact.
  • From “dirty thieves on the streets” to “pampered pets” and “social media stars,” it’s possible that South Korean cats are undergoing even greater transformations than the country as a whole.
